Landscape Painting – A Journey Through Art History
When we think of art, landscape paintings immediately spring to mind for many of us – and not without reason. Landscape paintings have been a part of art history since its earliest days and remain an integral part of our visual memory to this day. Impressive examples can be found as far back as antiquity: the frescoes of Pompeii, for instance, depict sweeping views of mountains, gardens or coastal landscapes and demonstrate just how early on people sought to capture their surroundings in paintings. In the Middle Ages and the Gothic period, landscape paintings often served as atmospheric backdrops to religious scenes, but during the Renaissance, nature increasingly took centre stage in its own right. Artists such as Albrecht Altdorfer made the landscape a subject in its own right – his ‘Danube Landscape with Wörth Castle’ remains to this day a prime example of how nature was idealised, yet depicted with great sensitivity.
And, of course, one can hardly fail to mention Claude Monet when discussing landscape painting. His ‘Water Lilies’ is not only world-famous, but also a symbol of how Impressionism redefined light, colour and atmosphere. The vibrant brushstrokes, the seemingly fleeting atmosphere – all this makes it clear why landscape painting still moves us today: landscape paintings depict not only places, but also feelings, memories and moments that we often overlook in everyday life.
Oil paintings, acrylic paintings, photography and more – the spectrum of landscape art
There are virtually no limits to landscape art: The spectrum ranges from classic oil paintings of landscapes to abstract landscape paintings in acrylic and even photographs. The styles of landscape art are just as diverse – from realistic views of nature to free, experimental interpretations. This variety opens up countless opportunities for you to discover your own personal favourite. Our young talents share their perspective on the world with you and invite you to experience landscapes anew through their eyes.
Landscape paintings in oil hold a special place in this context. The slow drying time of oil paint allows for rich textures, subtle nuances and a depth that makes nature tangible in all its tranquillity and power. From tranquil lakes to imposing mountain landscapes, an oil painting creates an atmosphere that literally draws the viewer into the scene. Abstract landscape painting in acrylic, on the other hand, thrives on luminosity and spontaneity. The quick-drying nature of the medium allows for dynamic layers and modern effects – ideal if you’re looking for landscape images in a contemporary, vibrant style. Photography, too, has its rightful place alongside landscape paintings. It captures fleeting moments that are often experienced only once, allowing you to relive them time and again. In this way, places that move you are kept alive in everyday life.

Landscape paintings in your home
Sometimes we need a place where we can let our thoughts run free – a little escape from everyday life. We often travel in our minds to moments that have shaped us, or to places we’d still like to experience. These inner landscapes have one thing in common: they give us peace, a sense of direction or inspiration. So why not turn your home into such a sanctuary? Landscape paintings in oil or acrylic, featuring animal motifs or plant and floral accents can do just that: they create atmospheres that go far beyond mere decoration and evoke feelings such as lightness, longing or wanderlust.
This creates a direct link between art and your personal aesthetic, and gives your home a deeper layer of meaning. Landscape paintings shape the character of a room – a picture of a winter landscape can create a gentle, soothing atmosphere, whilst an urban scene brings energy and modernity to the space. Art such as landscape paintings thus becomes a silent companion to your train of thought, transforming your home into a place where you can always feel at home again. At Studierenden Kunstmarkt, you can buy landscape paintings created by young talents at the start of their careers. In doing so, you support artists whilst also having the opportunity to invest in original art and landscape paintings at a fair price. Discover some of our promising artists here:
Christopher Schröder explores the interplay between form and colour in his paintings. His landscape paintings evoke atmospheric impressions reminiscent of rain, twilight or fleeting weather conditions, transporting viewers into quiet, almost poetic moments. Schröder has been studying Fine Art at the HfBK Dresden since 2021 in Prof. Christian Macketanz’s class – an environment in which he is continually developing his clear, intuitively structured visual language.
The oil paintings by Noah Rennebaum have an immediate and personal impact: short, lively brushstrokes open up spaces that you can literally step into. In his landscape paintings, Rennebaum combines personal experiences, observations of his surroundings and a strongly intuitive element. He has been pursuing his artistic path since 2015; he now works as an artist and tattoo artist in Leipzig and complements his practice by studying to become a teacher of art education at the University of Leipzig. Trained by, amongst others, Dr Frank Schulz, Andreas Wendt, Dr Ines Seumel and Markus Laube, he creates memorable narratives that straddle the line between figuration and abstraction – driven by curiosity, experimentation and the deep connection between humanity and nature.
Helena Jandt works with precision, calm and almost photographic accuracy. Her landscape paintings – whether urban scenes or rural retreats – convey a sense of familiarity and intimacy. Jandt, born in 2000, has been studying for a Master’s degree in Fine Art at Alanus University since 2022 in the painting class of Prof. Andreas Orosz, of which she has been a member since 2021. In her paintings and prints, she depicts places that have shaped her: impressions from her childhood, from Berlin and Alfter, coalesce into personal pictorial spaces that give visible form to a sense of belonging and memory.
