According to Edward Said, the study of Orientalism displays a supposed factual and institutionalised Western knowledge of the Orient. It is thus an academic discipline which represents a collection of Western made images, paintings (e.g. Judith by Gabriel Ferrier on the right), poesy, and cultural texts about the Orient. Consequently, the Orient had become an incarnated part of European and American material civilisation and it is why the Orient is perceived only with respect to the Western world ever since. My latest work deconstructs this problem in an artistic way similar as it has been done by Said in literary studies. The Orient was but an envisioned idea thus dissolving everything that is native to the eastern world for a supposed image created by the West. What remains are only fragments of a culture that in truth is as rich as our western way of living
